Addressing media today, about an incident which occured on July 19, 2025 involving a missing new born at Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital, Dr. Ssentongo agrees that, indeed Ms Namulondo delivered and received appropriate care from the hospital in July last year, however, her relative disappeared with the new born baby, let her find the cousin instead of blaming the hospital.

Upon discharge, Dr. Ssentongo reveals, “The mother reportedly handed over the baby to a person whom she initially identified as a cousin from Nansana, Wakiso district. However, it was later reported that the said person had disappeared with the baby.”

Immediately, after the matter was reported, the Hospital activated its internal emergency response procedures. The incident was promptly escalated to Hospital security, senior management and subsquently to the Uganda Police force, who are currently handling the investigations, according to Dr. Ssentongo. Preliminary reports from internal indicates that, the mother had intrusted the baby to an individual known to her prior to the disappearance.

Dr. Ssentongo (in the photo) said, at the time, the individual was perceived by both the mother and her attendants to be a relative or close associates and there was no indication to the Hospital of any immediate risk.

Hospital CCTV footage showing a ‘stranger’ taking off with a baby was handed over to police.

“The Hospital takes patient safety, particulary that of mother and newborns, with the utmost seriousness. We wish to assure the public that we are cooperating fully with investigative authorities and will continue to support all efforts aimed at solving this matter.” Said, Hospital boss, urging members of the public to remain calm and to allow the ongoing investigations to proceed without speculations or misinformation.
